How to accept that your child is gay or bisexual

Finding out that your son or daughter is gay, lesbian or bisexual may come as a surprise, but it is important that you can learn to understand and accept your child for what he is. This is very important because it can hit your child's confidence if you do not support their points of view.

1. Make sure your kids know you love them. They are fighting as much as you, do not make them feel worse.

2. Talk to your child. Be proud that you trust enough to tell you. Today's society does not always accept. Have an open dialogue in which both can ask questions and share concerns. Remember, your child probably feels a bit confused and very nervous too. Concentrate on not judging, not accusing, even if the subject makes you feel uncomfortable.

3. Remember that this is just who your child is, and if you think they were born that way or not, you still want your child to feel comfortable enough to feel that they can be true to themselves around you.

4. Make an effort to learn about homosexuality. You will be able to better understand your child's thoughts and feelings. This will also give you something to talk about.

5. Try to accept your child. If you are having trouble accepting your child's sexuality, consider joining a parent-oriented group where you can talk to your peers about your feelings. Talking to a counselor is another option.

6. Be a defender to family and friends. If you present your child with shame or disdain, your family can echo your attitude. Encourage acceptance by showing your family and friends that you have to respect and understand your child. Even and act as if you accept something can be a positive step toward openness of mind and true

8. Keep calm. Do not get angry or tell them that what they have "decided / accepted" is incorrect or suggest that it is only a phase and that it will happen later. Remember that your child may be afraid to tell you, or have the feeling that you deny them or hate them.

9. Ask your child what homosexuality means to them. For some people, it's not a big deal. It's just an aspect of who they are. For other people, it is critical of what they are. It is important that you understand where your child is coming from. If it is just one aspect of who they are, encouraging them to date someone repeatedly and talk about their orientation can bother them. If on the other hand, it is critical for those who are activists to ask about the love life of your child can be more than appreciated.
